Woolly Mammoth Fossil Ivory Carved Christian Cross Pendant | Ice Age Treasures

This Christian cross pendant is carved from the classic, light-toned inner core of a broken sherd of Woolly Mammoth tusk and finished with a sterling silver bale. The fossil ivory comes from material dating 12,000–40,000 years old, with natural light mineralization staining and subtle variation in the middle of the cross that make this piece very unique.

I shaped the cross to preserve the character of the tusk ivory rather than erase it with sanding thru layers. It has a warm, solid presence yet it carries the quiet story of Ice Age megafauna in a form of enduring spiritual symbolism. Length: 2" x 1-1/4"

The fossil ivory was sourced from The Boneyard Alaska in Fairbanks, where my brother John and our family discover and recover fossil materials from deep in the permafrost. It comes from an extinct Ice Age animal, and no modern animals were harmed.
